Family and friends become more important when you’re separated from them. I experienced this when I came to Canada, and sometimes, I felt lonely and missed my family. One of the effective strategy I have found to deal with homesickness is to focus on why I came abroad. Whenever I feel sad and miss home, I remind myself that I am abroad to study further, create a better future for myself, and my family proud. Looking at the bigger picture helps me know where I come from and appreciate where I am going.
2. Connect with your loved ones by using phone calls and video chat
Thanks to technology, It has become straightforward for us to connect with our friends and family. Whenever I feel like I lack support, I reach out to them via calls and video chat, which helps me to feel connected and supported.
3. Connect with others and make new friends
There are many opportunities to meet others in your new place through social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook group, which offer an excellent opportunity to connect with the locals and make new friends. You can find like-minded people by joining the group and following accounts related to your interests and hobbies. Moreover, social media can help you discover exciting events and activities in your area.
4. Turn your new space into a comfortable and homey space
To make your rented room or apartment feel less dull, add your personal items such as your loved ones’ photos, decorate your room with a small collections of book, a small plant or decorative elements. In short, try to make your new environment more comfortable and familiar, like your home to brighten up you space.
5. Do things that make you feel like you’re back at home
One of the simplest ways to deal with nostalgic is occasionally pretending that you never left. For example, making the same meals that your mother used to cook or visiting a temple that reminds you of your hometown. Similarly, there are various activities you are engage in to feel a sense of connection to your roots.
6. Continue your favorite hobby
Do not stop doing the things you love to do just because you move abroad. Find time in your schedule to continue it. This will bring a lot of joy. Whether it’s playing an instrument, painting or any sports, continuing your favorite activity can bring comfort in the midst of all the changes you might be experiencing. It can also be a great way to meet new people.

Along with continuing a hobby, pick up a new one. Finding new and exciting hobbies can help keep your mind occupied while learning new skills. Who knows, you may even make new friends along the way!

I still used to listen to old 80s Bollywood music because it always reminds me of my childhood when my grandparents used to play on the radio every morning. Listening to these songs made me smile and helped me to get out of missing home and bad mood.
11. Do Exercise
Sometimes you may feel anxiety and depression due to homesickness. However, exercising can help alleviate these symptoms by releasing endorphins natural chemicals that uplift your mood. To make the most of this mood-boosting benefit, you can invite your friends for the company, which can help reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness.
12. Explore your new city and country
There is much to explore and experience in your new home from the vibrant streets to the serene natural surroundings. To make the most of your time here, go out and discover new restaurants, cafes and local attractions. You might find hidden gems that you never knew existed. Try to engage in social activities to you, whether joining a local club or taking a guided tour. On weekends I love to explore this new country, recently I went to Montreal with my friends and it was a amazing trip.
